The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Paris has received an appeal from Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat challenging her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024.
CAS has assigned Dr. Annabelle Bennett, a former Federal Court of Australia judge, as the sole arbitrator. A hearing with the relevant parties is scheduled for August 9.
CAS has indicated that a decision will likely be reached before the Olympics end on August 11.
Phogat, who was set to compete in the women’s 50 kg wrestling final, was disqualified after missing the weight limit by about 100 grams, as determined by United World Wrestling (UWW).
Phogat filed her appeal on August 7, requesting the annulment of the disqualification, a new weigh-in, and her eligibility to compete in the final. The CAS press release noted that while the Ad hoc Division procedure is expedited, a final decision could not be made within an hour due to the need to hear from UWW first. The ongoing procedure includes Phogat’s request for the disqualification to be overturned and for her to be awarded a shared silver medal.
